In a surprising turn of events, Australian opener David Warner has made headlines by announcing his retirement from Test cricket just days before the highly anticipated World Test Championship Final against India at The Oval. Warner, who is currently in London preparing for the final, revealed his decision to bid farewell to the Test format at the end of the upcoming Australian summer.


Speaking to reporters in Beckenham, Warner disclosed his retirement plans, stating that he intends to conclude his Test career following Australia's Test match against Pakistan in January, which will take place at his home ground in Sydney. This means he will not be available for the two-match Test series against West Indies. However, Warner clarified that he will continue to play white-ball cricket for Australia until the 2024 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in the West Indies and the USA.


Warner emphasized the importance of scoring runs and expressed his intention to make the 2024 World Cup his final game. He acknowledged that his spot in the XI is not guaranteed for the upcoming six-Test tour of the UK and acknowledged the need to be consistent and perform better than his previous tour during the 2019 Ashes series, where he struggled against deliveries from Stuart Broad, averaging only 10. Warner, who recently participated in the IPL, hopes to carry his form from the T20 league into red-ball cricket.


Looking ahead, Warner mentioned the desire to participate in the 2024 World Cup, highlighting it as a goal he has set for himself. With plenty of cricket to be played before then, he anticipates participating in various leagues, including the IPL, to stay in rhythm leading up to the tournament. He even entertained the possibility of playing a Shield game for New South Wales.


Warner's retirement announcement has taken the cricketing world by surprise, adding an additional layer of intrigue to the upcoming WTC final. As he prepares to face India and subsequently England in the Ashes series, Warner's focus will be on making a significant impact before bidding farewell to Test cricket in front of his home crowd.
